On December 22, 2007, Kevin Beattie, who is now in his third and final year of the Scholarship, was presented with a certificate attesting to his receipt of the scholarship by Sheila Washburn, Thom's mother. This took place at the annual Scholars' luncheon at the Ramada Inn. (Photos by Ken Washburn)

Kevin is now in his third year of Geological Engineering at UNB. During the past summer he worked with a Well field Protection Engineer doing an inventory of chemical stores at UNB, programming an inventory management database, and assisting with the preparation of Well field Protection documentation and disaster plans. He took a two week break from this job to assist the director of GE, Dr. Karl Butler, to use geophysical methods to determine aggregate quality for the government.

Kevin has been elected president of the geological engineering society. Outside of university both Kevin and his fiancée Sara Davidson received a gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards from Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex in October, 2007. This involved hiking 90 km in four days, and other physical and community-spirited challenges.

PRESS RELEASE DECEMBER 29, 2005:   Kevin Beattie, first winner of the Thomas Washburn Memorial Scholarship, was honoured at a dinner held in the Ramada Inn on December 29, 2005. A graduate of Fredericton High School, Kevin is a first year student in geological engineering at the University of New Brunswick. The award was based on Kevin's high academic standing and his involvement in student and community affairs. At the dinner Kevin was presented with a silver medallion made by Bejewel and showing an eagle in flight surrounded by an engineer's ring.

PRESS RELEASE APRIL 18, 2005: We are pleased to announce that Kevin Beattie has been offered the 2005 Thomas Washburn Memorial Scholarship. A top-level student, Kevin is the 2nd Vice-president of the Student Representative Council of Fredericton High School, a member of the senior band and principal clarinetist of the FHS orchestra. In the last year Kevin has had a lead role in organizing two school events and, among other things, is involved with peer tutoring at lunch hours. Kevin also sings in a church choir, works at two part-time jobs and is a Duke of Edinburgh Award winner. His interest in rocks and minerals and in engineering has lead him to apply to and be accepted in the Geological Engineering program at the University of New Brunswick. Sue Blair of the Scholarship Committee says "Kevin Beattie has many of the qualities that lead my brother, Thom Washburn, to a successful career in engineering. We are delighted to be able to help Kevin start on the same career path."
