Matthew Nickerson, TWME Scholar 2010

UPDATE MARCH, 2014

At this time, Matthew is completing his 4th of a 5 year program in Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. His specialization is in Mechatronics with a key focus on Robotics. This past term for his Machine Design class Matthew built a six-legged kinematic machine which he is continuing to improve upon by adding a control system. Currently, in Fluids Design, Matt has been tasked with designing, modelling and fabricating a small axial flow pump rotor.

Matthew has consistently excelled academically and has been active in his school community. For the past three years at UNB Matt has been very involved with the Student Society of Mechanical Engineers (SSME) and is currently the President. The SSME runs yearly events for the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at UNB, Namely the Coaster Derby, Barbeques and Banquets. This year, Matthew raised money through the Engineering Endowment Fund as well as the Engineering Program Fund to organize a three day trip to Boston. This trip is for 12 Mechanical Engineering students to tour a prestigious engineering school, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Boston. Matthew also helped organize the UNB Robotics Competition, servings as VP Parts.

The past two summers Matthew has participated on cooperative work terms which have provided a range of challenges and opportunities. In 2012 Matthew's experience in the Facilities Maintenance group at Irving Paper Ltd. provided him with an excellent view into the pulp and paper industry. Matthew spent the summer of 2013 in Tuttlingen, Germany, where he gained valuable experience in programming and simulation of Fanuc Robotic Arms at Chiron-Werke GmbH.

PRESS RELEASE June 15, 2010: Matthew Nickerson is the fifth winner of the Thomas Washburn Memorial Engineering Scholarship. Matthew graduated from Fredericton High School in June, 2010. He is our second Scholar to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. Philippe Couturier graduated from UNB in the spring of 2010 and is now pursuing graduate studies at École Polytechnique in Montreal.

Three other scholars have chosen the same university as Matthew. Michelle Bendrich has completed her second year of Chemical Engineering. Gillian Phillips has completed the third year of Electrical Engineering and Kevin Beattie is a graduate of Geological Engineering. We know that Matthew will enjoy the same success with his studies as the previous scholars and will become a competent and successful professional engineer.
