Philippe Couturier, graduate Ecole Sainte-Anne, 2006

PRESS RELEASE MAY 26, 2006:  We are pleased to announce that Philippe Couturier is the 2006 winner of the Thomas Washburn Memorial Scholarship. "I have wanted to pursue studies in engineering for many years because," Philippe says, "I have always been interested in designing, creating and building things." This interest resulted in his becoming the founding president of his school's robotics team which placed sixth this year at an Atlantic competition. Philippe has been accepted into the Engineering program at the University of New Brunswick where he intends to study mechanical engineering.

Philippe graduates from École Ste.-Anne, Fredericton's French language high school this year. He is not only a top scholar and a soccer and basketball player but he has been very active in student affairs. He is president of his graduating class of 80 students which means that he has been a leader in the organization of the Safe Grad night, the prom dance, the teacher's acknowledgement night and the casino night. He also was the producer and director of the Grad Show.

Philippe has been a member of the provincial youth committee "Comité Consultatif Jeunesse" and a member of the organizing committee for the "French for the Future" national conference held in Fredericton in February, 2006. Forty students from across Canada participated in a variety of group discussions and workshops regarding the importance of bilingualism. He also is a pianist. The Recreation Leader for the City of Fredericton where Philippe is a life guard, Angela Johnson, says that he "always strives to do his best, which shows in every thing he does". We are proud that Philippe will become the second Thomas Washburn scholar.
